For this assignment, you will compose a 1,100 word essay that analyzes a
scholarly argument and uses textual evidence to evaluate its effectiveness. Essentially, should use quotations, paraphrasing, and some summary to answer the following questions: “To what degree, and
how, is the article effective for its intended audience?” While the previous assignment
focused entirely on summary, your should keep your summary of this article minimal so
that you can spend more time in the essay analyzing its effectiveness (a common guideline
in publishing is that no more than 10% of the content from your essay should be summary
of the piece you are analyzing. You will need to present the author’s point of view as
clearly, fairly, and accurately, and then use evidence from the text to make a reasonable
claim about its effectiveness. While you summarize far less for this assignment, you should
see that you cannot analyze a piece effectively or ethically without fair and accurate
summary.
