For the literary analysis essay, you will analyze one of the poems we have read thus far. Choose a
poem that affected you, one you found interesting, one with which you connected somehow.
1. Reread the poem at least once more. As you read, pay attention to the poetic devices (rhyme,
rhythm, audience, speaker, rhetorical situation), figurative language (imagery, simile, metaphor,
personification), sound devices (alliteration, consonance, assonance, and the sounds of words),
and literary devices (tone, theme, irony, symbolism). Highlight any phrases that stand out as
particularly well-crafted or meaningful.
