PART 1 Students are to select THREE historical events which reflect the evolution of civil rights and freedoms in Australia AND the US during the twentieth century (two from the Australian context and one from the American context). For each event, students are to provide a written or visual source that is annotated for: context, reliability, usefulness and a personal justification as to why you perceive the event to be significant. Each annotation should be approximately 150 words (for a total of approximately 450 words for this section). PART 2 Students must then compose a 500 word reflection in response to the following statement: ‘The struggle to achieve rights and freedoms is not just historical, but continues to be a struggle in the modern world.’ In their reflection students must make judgments about how relevant the civil rights issues central to the events from Part 1 continue to be in modern Australian and/or American society. The response must include direct comparison of historical events with current trends and events. The reflection must be structured using the PEEL scaffold and should incorporate explicit reference to sources.
