In preparation for your science lesson study, please provide the following for submission.
Topic:
Standard:
Learning Objective: Remember this should have the audience, criteria, and measurement.
Please make sure you submit this in a word document format. Each week you will continue to add details to your lesson study on this document.
Example Learning Objective: The students will be able to classify a group of living things and demonstrate their learning through creating a graphic organizer of trait characteristics.
This should be a video you watch and reflect upon and discover ways you can incorporate such scaffolding in your teaching and planning. You will need to incorporate this strategy into your lesson study.
Watch fourth-grade teacher Glen McKnight, scaffold student thinking to test a variable during an investigation. How specifically, did Mr. McKnight help students set up a meaningful, investigative task?
This is not an assignment for submission. This should be a video you watch and reflect upon and discover ways you can incorporate such science discourse in your teaching and planning.
Watch this video to see students talking in their small groups about the phenomenon of touching a suspended ping pong ball with a vibrating tuning fork. Then, find out why their teacher considers such science discourse to be so important for learning without understanding.
Engage Phase: Lesson Study
Thinking about your lesson study, begin formulating the engage phase of your lesson study. You may use the reference link in this week’s folder to help you draft engage phase. You may also look at examples in the back of your textbook.
5.5 Exploration
Look over the instructional plan “Lighting the Bulb” and read Vignette 5.3, about the science lesson, 5.5 “Let There Be Light!.” that follows. Page 101 in text.
Work individually or with a colleague to try to identify the parts of the lesson that correspond with each of the phases of the 5E model. Use the information in Table 5.4 to help you complete this task.
Reflection Questions:
1. What happens during the engage phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the engage phase?
2. What happens during the explore phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the explore phase?
3. What happens during the explain phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the explain phase?
4. What happens during the elaborate phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the elaborate phase?
5. What happens during the evaluation phase of this lesson? How do these activities relate to the function of the evaluation phase?
6. Is the lesson “Let There Be Light!” a good example of a 5E lesson? Why or why not?
