Sexualities in Sports

Unit 4 Activity: Sexualities and Sport
In chapter 5, Schultz discusses sexualities and sport. Towards the end of the chapter, she refers to Pat Griffin’s work Strong Women, Deep Closets: Lesbians and Homophobia in Sport. In particular, she discusses the six manifestations of homophobia in sport: silence, denial, apology, the promotion of a heterosexy image, attacks on lesbians, and a preference for male coaches. Although the book was written in 1998, Schultz states that these 6 manifestations “still ring true today.”
Task: Assess the impact of 2 of the 6 manifestations over the last 3 years.
Step 1) Pick two of the 6 manifestations.
Step 2) Look for evidence that addresses the impact of your selected manifestations. In particular, look for newspaper stories (The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, etc.) that address each manifestation. (Newspapers are accessible online through the Oviatt LibraryLinks to an external site.)
Step 3) For each manifestation, write a description of its impact over the last three years based on the supporting evidence from your research. Make sure to clearly define what the manifestation is and clearly describe how the manifestation is currently impacting women’s sport. Each description should be 200-250 words and should be in double spaced, 12 pt., Times New Roman font.
Step 4) In APA format, list citations for the materials you used. See this link for how to cite sources in APA
