Slang Terms on Campus

Analysis #1: Slang Terms on Campus

Collect and document 2-3 slang words or phrases used by students on campus. You should gather these expressions either by observing other people or referencing your own knowledge of a particular social group. You should not collect these expressions from a dictionary of slang. Your report should begin with a short introductory paragraph that states how you collected the data and determined their meanings. Next, you should provide a list of the terms that includes (1) the slang term, (2) a definition of the term (i.e., what it means for the people who use it), and (3) a sample sentence (preferably a real rather than invented one) illustrating the use of the term. Finally, explain when, how, why and by whom these terms are used. In other words, discuss the types of contexts in which the words would be used, when their use would be avoided, what social meaning is attached to the use of the words (such as how the words index particular in-group identities or contrast the in-groups with other out-groups).
