Post an example from the USA that fits the definition of socialism. Examples that fit the definition and have not already been posted by another student will earn extra credit points.
Examples can be related to any parts of the definitions:
– Property Ownership (remember the options: public / private, also remember the difference between utilities and luxuries)
– Government Involvement in the Economy (remember the options: regulations, programs, or not)
Remember to explain why your example fits the definition of socialism.
My first example of socialism is this: https://site.bcc.cuny.edu/About-BCC/?p=College-History
Bronx Community College was established in 1957 after a decade of effort by civic-minded groups in Bronx County to meet the growing need for increased higher education facilities in the borough… In 1973, the New York State Dormitory Authority acquired the New York University Heights Campus for the use of Bronx Community College. Beginning with the fall 1973 semester, operations were moved to the present 45-acre site overlooking the Harlem River
This is an example of public property. The purpose of this college is not to make all education equal in New York, but to provide access to basic college courses to people living in the Bronx. Basic education is a utility in this city because if the people of the Bronx did not have access to the level of education provided by BCC, they would be at a significant disadvantage when participating in economic activities in the city. This includes competing for jobs, understanding the economic system, networking and making business contacts, applying for loans, starting a business, and generally navigating in society. Without access to BCC some people who not have access to any college courses. BCC provides a public option for those people who cannot afford a private college. This option does not make anyone equal, but it does provide access to a basic level of education for people who would otherwise not have any.
My second example of socialism is this: https://www.hesc.ny.gov/pay-for-college/apply-for-financial-aid/nys-tap.html
The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) helps eligible New York residents pay tuition at approved schools in New York State. Depending on the academic year in which you begin study, an annual TAP award can be up to $5,165. Because TAP is a grant, it does not have to be paid back.
TAP is a government program where the government (in this case the NY State government) interferes with, or gets involved in, the economy. TAP does not make everyone equal, and everyone does not receive TAP. The government created this program to provide basic access to education for people in order to maintain a basic standard of living. Many people have standards of living the are above this basic level. The purpose of TAP is to make sure that no one falls below what is considered the minimum level.
