SPECIFIC SOURCES SHOULD BE USED.
Paret, Peter. Makers or Modern Strategy: from Machiavelli to the Nuclear Age. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1986.
Sun Tzu’s Art of War, in Roots of Strategy Book I: The Five Greatest Military Classics of All Time. edited by Brig. Gen. Thomas R. Phillips.
This will be 12-15 pages long (double spaced, Times New Roman font, Chicago style) on the theories and theorists of war based on the following topic question.
1. Did Sun Tzu and Clausewitz believe war is an art or a science?
2. Did they view strategy differently than war?
3. Did they have the same or divergent views regarding war and strategy being an art or a science?
4. Do you agree with either of their assessments regarding war/strategy being an art or a science?
5. What are the implications of this opinion for the study (not just conduct) of strategy and war?
You do not need to use any outside sources to answer this, as these questions were covered in the course. However, I would strongly encourage you to re-read all of the class materials, re-read Sun Tzu & Clausewitz, and reflect on the question for some time before beginning. Stronger papers still use evidence to prove your case so regardless of whether that is from the course material or outside sources, remember to cite them using Turabian (Chicago) style citations.
