These verses condense many of the titles that have been associated with Jesus already in
the course of the Lukan gospel up to this point. Each means something different.
Your task is threefold:
(1) Identify all the titles you see in these verses from the Lukan Passion Narrative. Then
indicate which character in this gospel is using the title and in what manner (a fact?
wonder? scorn? an accusation? direct address to Jesus?). How does that context affect its
meaning?
(2) Once you have that list, find a verse or passage earlier in this gospel where each title
already appeared and compare the passages in order to expand your definition for each
title. Search only in passages already assigned for this class— there is no need and no
grade advantage to be gained by scouring the entire Lukan gospel. But you will need to
review all assigned passages up to Luke 22:46, starting with the Infancy Narrative.
(3) Then explain what each title means or implies about Jesus, especially in the Passion
Narrative using both verses you have found for each. Burkett’s chapter will help.
At this point, you have the body of your paper. Each title will need at least one
paragraph of discussion. In its topic sentence, state clearly what title you are discussing.
Use footnoted citations and quotations as needed to support your points. The more detail,
the better your score.
Finally, based on the titles you have evaluated, do you think the Lukan gospel is using
them to make a point(s) about who Jesus really is. What is that point? Again, specifics
matter.
If your paper is not a full 5-6 pages, you probably have missed some titles or forgotten
the supporting comparisons.
