Style: High Style. No 1st or 2nd person. No contractions or conversation, informal word choice
Audience: Educated adults with a general knowledge and curiosity about the topic.
Purpose: To inform your audience using a thoroughly supported analysis that incorporates
description, explanation, or cause and effect to enhance organization and understanding.
Length: 3 to 5 pages typed double-spaced
Assignment: Analysis requires that you observe, describe, and explain the causes and/or effects
of a specific situation or condition. Prepare an analysis that is supported by examples, using
description to make those examples real to readers.
Project Components: 1) Final copy of essay
2) Rough draft of essay
3) Peer review comments
Assignment Evaluation: Analysis essays must be narrowly focused and logically organized to
appeal to readers. Your essay will be evaluated on its focus and organization, as well as the use of
specific evidence that contributes to your readers’ understanding of your topic. All papers must
contain a thesis that explains the causal connections between causes and effects of a given event
or trend. All essays will benefit from an organizational “essay map” that previews the subtopics of
the argument. Use of analogies, similes, and metaphors may be helpful to your readers. Papers
should be free of mechanical and typographical errors.
