Think about the loved ones of individuals with these aphasias. What frustrations do you think they would have in dealing with someone in their life with these aphasias?

Application Activity
Aphasia

Aphasia is the loss of ability to speak or understand speech, usually due to brain damage. Broca’s aphasia is due to damage in Broca’s area of the brain, whereas Wernicke’s Aphasia is due to damage in Wernicke’s area of the brain.

Watch the following videos in the order they are listed in the table. They are fairly short.

Using what you’ve learned about Broca’s and Wernicke’s Areas and their roles in speech, explain how each Broca’s and Wernicke’s Aphasia (disability to use those areas fully) manifests itself. How would someone with each of these aphasias act? What would they have problems with?
Reflect on how you would feel if you had one of these aphasias. What do you think would be your three (3) biggest frustrations with these disabilities?
