A child’s upbringing and relationship with the primary caregiver can have long-term effects and ultimately shape who they are internally and as members of society. It can affect the relationship they have with friends and romantic partners. Lundahl and Hull describe various types of attachment styles that can be seen from childhood.
The first attachment style is secure. A child who has a secure attachment style has what the authors describe as a “home base”. This means that the child is able and willing to explore their environment and rely on the caregiver in times of stress or difficult experiences and then return back to exploring when they feel it is okay. “Children with secure attachments in childhood develop more positive social emotional competence, cognitive functioning, physical health and mental health” (Lundhal & Hull, 2014).
Children with an anxious-avoidant attachment style will explore their surroundings or environment while paying little attention to the caregiver. When the caregiver has left, the child shows very minimal signs of distress and upon return, show little interest in the reunion.
Ambivalent-resistant attachment style occurs when a child is emotionally dependent on the caregiver. In this situation, the child does not explore his/her surroundings and clings to the caregiver. There is extreme distress when separated and upon return as well.
The last attachment style described is disorganized. In this case, there is a lack of any sort of attachment to the caregiver.
In the movie Joe the King, neither boy has a real attachment to either parent. In the scene where Joe is sent away, there’s little to no distress at the thought of being separated from his parents.
