In each area, images of the Buddha, temples, and stupas each take on characteristics unique to each region. What are the differences and similarities among the various styles and regions? The stupa takes many different forms as it travels from its origin in India throughout southeast Asia. Discuss the different shapes of the stupa and how this might be related to the visual representation of the Buddha.

Borobudur
Borobudur is a rich, complex Buddhist monument. What are some of the possible interpretations of the monument? Why do you think some of the stupas at the top of the monument are open, while the central stupa is closed? Why do you think the terraces are walled in, obscuring the surrounding landscape, while the upper terrace is left open?
