What are the different points that you see the authors making in their parables?

For this reading response, you’ll be commenting on two philosophical works of fiction that deal with the idea of utopia and dystopia. Ursula K. Le Guin’s story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and N.K. Jemisin’s story “The Ones Who Stay and Fight” both imagine “utopian” societies in order to make comments on justice, injustice, and how we respond to issues in society. Jemisin’s story is a direct response to Le Guin’s and both use science fiction and fantasy elements.
In 150 words or more, discuss the similarities and differences in the societies of Omelas and Um-Helat imagined in the two stories. What are the different points that you see the authors making in their parables? Do you consider either of them a “utopia” (an ideal society)?
