Subliminal Weight Messaging Investigation – Post and Replies
Q: What is the purpose of this assignment?
A: Our decisions about how we look are defined by a variety of influences. Obvious influences are our families, people we esteem, magazines, celebrities, tv. Yet how do we come to accept those images? The not-so-obvious influences are subliminal messages which alter our thought patterns and influence our decisions. Advertisers know images of puppies and babies unarm people and attract their attention. But that is not lasting. If you send messages to a person, quietly, it eats at their psyche and cultivates an opinion. That opinion is of ourselves when we see messaging of how our bodies are “supposed” to look. We can manipulate our bodies, but we can not change them. What we have is our gift to ourselves. How we care for it is our passion and responsibility. The purpose of this assignment is to recognize subliminal messaging, and separate the food/beverage/supplement/meal replacement products actual product from the messaging. In other words, remove the mask.
Weight Messaging – Post
Find 2 examples of current food/beverage/supplement/meal replacement products with subliminal messaging in the product marketing. Each will promote a body and weight type, which negatively alters our relationship with our bodies by emphasizing to us we need to be improved (as we must be broken) by changing our body to an ideal weight and/or size/type.
The examples MUST be real products you find at the store (maximum 1 can be a supplement). You HAVE TO include pictures of the products you found, and the products’ package messaging (words and/or image(s)) which promote action to change your body with the product’s help. You may NOT download the picture from the internet. 10 points maximum.
Please analyze the 2 products separately.
Submit each example, addressing the 5 questions for each example:
Please include pictures (for each product) of the marketing (images/information/words/package design) which convey a suggested better body type. The pictures must be clear.
Describe the image/information/words/package design used for the product marketing which caught your attention (negatively)?
How do these images, information, words, and/or packaging design subliminally convey messages which promote weight loss and/or body change?
In what way can this induce us to question our self image and negatively alter our relationship with our bodies?
