Assignment 1: Learning Group Facilitation
The purpose of this assignment is to build on your facilitation and leadership skills and engage in critical and thought-provoking discussions about the materials presented throughout the term. The learning groups will meet 5 times throughout the course of the semester. Each group will be comprised of 5 members and will be formed at the beginning of the course. Once the group is chosen, each member will then choose a date on which they will be responsible to facilitate the discussion. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they show up on time and prepared to lead the group. The date you chose will be your only opportunity to complete this assignment. Group discussions will last approx. 30-40 minutes. You will be expected to facilitate discussions that connect to that week’s assigned topics, it will be up to you what you decide to focus on for the group session. The discussion could be based on the weeks readings, a journal article, a current event (media article, story etc). On the assigned dates we will meet as a group online at the start of class and then be broken into our learning groups to begin the class.
Once you have completed your facilitation, you will have one week to complete a 1-2 page paper that reflects on the learning you had as a group facilitator. Your submission will also include an additional page with the questions you had prepared for the group. You will also be required to provide feedback to your colleagues when they facilitate. You will use this feedback when assigning yourself a grade for this assignment. A more detailed rubric for self-grading will be provided.
Your reflection paper will include the following:
Discuss your experience leading the group. What was it like to be the facilitator? How did you prepare differently knowing that you would be leading the discussion? What went well and what would you do differently in the future?
How are leadership and facilitation skills used to support clients and mitigate risk?
Was there anything new you learned through this process (about yourself, leadership, facilitating, etc)? How will you take this learning with you into the field?
Your prepared questions for the discussion. I will be looking for depth of insight, connection to key concepts and ability for your questions to promote interesting discussion.
