I recommend you choose one facet and research the issues the issues around it / them. Keeping with the New Orleans example … if you choose an artist from New Orleans such as Jelly Roll Motion … look at his early life, the issues he faced (racism, poverty . Violence , genius, Technology ( player pianos) etc etc. Or you may choose Spanish rule of Loiusiana , dates, how long did they own it ? how did that affect the evolution of music? Look at the rights of slaves, compare it to British and French rules, Congo Square etc.
