Case Study #5 – Biblical Counseling Approach
JoAnn comes to counseling at the suggestion of her youth minister. She has been a faithful member of her youth group since she was a freshman in high school but now that she has started college she is frequently questioning her faith. She wonders why God allows such bad things to happen in the world and she has withdrawn from her engagement at her church. She has also begun to date a young man who claims to be an atheist. Although she does not agree with his worldview, she finds herself attracted to the young man and has skipped classes and other responsibilities to be with him. Although she denies having sex with him, she does admit that she is thinking about it and that he is pressuring her to “commit” to him by having sex. Her youth minister has expressed his concern to her, but she has withdrawn from activities in the youth group because everyone is “judgmental.” When asked about her goals for counseling she asserts that she wants to “renew” her faith and come to some decisions regarding her boyfriend.
