US Consumers are exposed to roughly 1500 promotional messages a day (one study estimates that number closer to 3,500). Most of these messages are filtered out of our conscious awareness to prevent our heads from exploding. Take five minutes sometime this week (not while you’re driving!!) and notice how many messages you receive. Remember, these messages can come from obvious sources like television, radio or printed advertising, but they can also come from other people’s clothing, your phone, packaging (i.e. Starbuck’s cups, etc.) signage on trucks or other transit and so forth. At the end of the five minute period, you will want to note:
An approximate tally of the number of exposures (for you quantitative types – how does this number in the five minute period translate to a regular 16 hour day?).
The most intrusive message
The message with the greatest impact
For your contribution, please write a paragraph describing where you conducted your experiment and when, as well as the information you recorded above. Be sure to both contribute and respond to at least one other student before the deadline on Sunday for full credit and remember that missed discussions can’t be made up.
