1. The Review must be typed and double-spaced and between 1250 words or 5 pages
minimum to 1750 words or 7 pages maximum. 2. You do not have to disagree with the argument presented to review it
well. 3. Aim to present a critical appreciation of the argument of the article you are
reviewing. This requires discussing its arguments not just summarising it. Those
who confine themselves to summarising the article, however well it is done, will
get a very low mark and could even fail. Discussing the argument involves several
things: a. Identify the argument. Whether it is obvious or not, each article has an
argument. What does it argue? How is it argued and how well? Do you
agree with the conclusions? Does the article succeed in doing what it
claims to do? Remember, in particular, that you take the time to

understand the whole argument and not only a part of it. The whole
argument may consist of several parts or sub arguments. Your review must
give a reasonable and reasonably full account of the article’s argument. b. Place the argument, and the author, in their historical context and identify
the views against which, or in relation to which, the author’s views took
shape and against which their distinctiveness is thrown into relief. Why
should one be interested in this article/argument? How does it improve
our knowledge and understanding? You may want to (but are not required
to) undertake some additional research to understand it better and cite it
appropriately in your review. c. Critical appreciation means neither unrelenting objection nor fawning
approval but measured appreciation and critique. Criticism must
acknowledge achievements and as well as limitations. 4. Please do not fill pages with irrelevant information or comments on the author’s
identity or style of writing unless it is relevant to the argument. 5. In the review you may also do some other things: a. Present a focussed analysis of a critical or interesting part of the article (a
stage in the argument, a revealing anecdote) etc. which allows you to
comment in depth on the article’s contents b. Make connections with other related works or views 6. The understandings generated in this and related courses will help you
understand the argument and develop your own critical appreciation of it.
Appropriate use of class materials in the review will be rewarded. You may also
want to read further about the article and its subject matter. You may consult me
about this during office hours if you wish. 7. Your close reading and understanding of the article under review must be evident
in the review. 8. A final piece of advice. Writing a review proceeds much more efficiently if you
have read the article some time in advance of writing the review and let its
contents grow on you a bit. It also helps to talk to others about it. It helps to make
clearer about what the article is about, where its significance lies and, most
