In Kids These Days, Malcolm Harris writes that most of what sucks about work today “has to be understood in the context of massive deunionization in America” and a “decline in strike activity” (89). To get a sense of what Harris means here, we will watch a film that predates the Millennial and Gen Z generations: Harlan County U.S.A. (dir. Barbara Kopple). After watching Harlan County U.S.A., you will write a short (2-3 page double-spaced) analysis on the film. While you will likely need to summarize parts of the documentary, your writing should move toward analysis. You might consider the following questions: What was the purpose of the documentary? What does it show about the KY coal miners strike, and how does the director, Barbara Kopple, film the strike?
You should also incorporate what Harris says about work in Kids These Days. If “it looks more likely that American industrial labor unions as [we see in Harlan County U.S.A.] won’t survive another generation,” (91) then what are other ways future generations can demand better working conditions?
