Cause and Effect Essay

Face to face learning vs. Online Learning

A compare-and-contrast essay analyzes two subjects by comparing and contrasting them, both. Thus,
the essay must be about the two subjects written. This essay is not about you. Make sure that your
thesis clearly states the subjects as well as three similarities that each share. Academic writing requires
the presentation of a thesis statement in the opening paragraph. This essay must include researched
information from one to two outside sources. Use only library sources (books, magazines, newspapers,
journals, e-books, GALILEO, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, Films on Demand, etc.). How to access the college’s
database: go to centralgatech.edu → Academics → Academic Resources → Library → Library Resources
→select a database.
Follow MLA guidelines to format and document your essay correctly:
1. First, select the font. Use Times New Roman. Select size twelve. The entire paper is to be written
in this font. Don’t change it.
2. Set the page on double spacing. Follow all of the steps to set double spacing. The entire paper
from your name at the top to the last sentence is double spaced. Do not add extra spaces.
3. Use the Insert tab at the top of your screen, go to Page Numbering, and set up your last name
followed by the page number in the upper right-hand corner of the page.
4. Type your name header in four lines. Do NOT use the header template. Type this information at
the top four lines: Your Name, Williams, ENGL 1101, and the due date (Date Month Year).
5. Put one double space between the date and your title. Center your title. Use correct
capitalization. Do not enlarge or underline your title. Do not put it in italics, quotation marks, or
boldface.
6. Put one double space between the title and the hook sentence. Indent each paragraph by
pressing your TAB key one time.
7. Use 3rd person pronouns throughout the entire essay. Reframe from the person pronouns: you,
I, me, our, your, my, yours, mines, we, yourself, yourselves, myself.
8. Include ONE or Two outside source(s).
9. Create a Work(s) Cited.
10. Add the in-text citation. In almost all cases, use the author’s name if you have it.
• …end of sentence (Smith). [If no page number is present]
• …end of sentence (Smith 42) [Page number if you have it]
• …end of sentence (Smith, Jones). [Two authors]
• …end of sentence (“Views from the Future”). [Only if you have no author, use a shortened
version of the article title in quotation marks.]
11.

Follow the 5-paragraph structure below:
Paragraph #1: Introduction (3-5 sentences)
Paragraph #2: Thesis Point #1 (8-11 sentences)
Paragraph
#3: Thesis Point #2 (8-11 sentences)
Paragraph #4: Thesis Point #3 (8-11 sentences)
Paragraph #5: Conclusion (3-5 sentences)

Your sources MUST be correctly documented with both IN-TEXT CITATIONS and a WORKS CITED PAGE.
According to the course syllabus, any assignment that presents outside source material and fails to
document the source(s) correctly will be penalized up to 20 points (10 for missing in-text citationor 20
for missing work(s) cited). However, failure to include both in-text citations and a works cited will
automatically result in a zero.
