This is a Q and A forum. Please respond to my initial post to view your classmates’ posts.
1. What is the difference, according to Aristotle, between performing virtuous actions and being a virtuous person? (Give an example.) Do you agree with him that the latter is more valuable? Explain your reasoning.
(Here’s how to think about an example. In my seated sections, I ask my students if there is a difference between the act of telling the truth and the quality of being an honest person. And then I ask them a couple of questions. Do dishonest people ever tell the truth? When might an honest person conceal the truth, or even lie?)
2. Aristotle says that virtue is a “mean” between two extremes. For instance, the virtue of courage consists of the disposition to feel neither too much nor too little fear, but rather some appropriate amount in between. Is this consistent with his claim that some actions (such as stealing and adultery) are always wrong in all circumstances? Explain your reasoning.
3. Reproduce your weekly writing assignment here. (You can go ahead and copy-paste your assignment. Accordingly, you may want to complete your weekly )
This assignment is worth 50 points and is part of your Forum grade. Your initial post is worth up to 30 points.
In order to earn up to an additional 20 points, you must respond to two of your classmates’ answers to question (3). Your replies must be substantive.
A sufficiently thoughtful set of initial responses to the prompts should total roughly one-and-a-half to two pages in length (500-600 words total). Each response to a classmate should be at least 100 words.
To earn full credit your assignment must demonstrate effort, thoughtfulness, and comprehension.
In addition, you must properly do an least two (2) in-text citations. Do not worry about a Works Cited page, but do include the page number from the textbook for your citations. Please review the information at In-Text Citation Basics at Purdue Owl.
Please note the due date and the cutoff date is the same for this and all assignments. Late work is not accepted.
Please read over your answers before you submit so that the answers make sense. I look forward to reading your answers!
