What features do they have in common? How are they different? In what ways can one be said to be related to (descended from) another? If you wish, you may make reference to other writing systems discussed in class and in the readings. Also consider the ways each culture has used writing: why was literacy important in each society? What kinds of texts are of significance? 2-3pages. Please organize your responses in a traditional essay format, which includes an introduction with thesis, a body of supporting examples, and a conclusion. The essay must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins on all sides. Please number your pages. Citations must be in MLA7 format.
Citing: When you cite from Cunningham, Reich, and Fichner-Rathus, please give an abbreviated form of the authors’ names followed by the page number: (CR&F-R 26). DO NOT place a comma between the authors’ names and the page number. If you cite from the Blackboard texts, please simply indicate the title (or author if there is one) and the page number of the printed-out document if you can see the page numbers on the scanned document: (Algeo 55). Please include a Works Cited page.
You will need to change to one-inch margins (if you do not use the template provided). If you do not know how to do this, search Help for Margins (different versions of Microsoft Word do this differenty).
Evaluation: I will evaluate each essay on the clarity of your thesis, aptness and sufficiency of your supporting evidence, accurate use of the MLA7 as outlined above and at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/01/, and the quality of your writing. I will give a letter grade to each essay and convert it to the appropriate score; specific point deductions will be given for the following writing infractions:
Margins are not one-inch: 05 points
Pages are not numbered: 05 points
No Citations (if required): 15 points
Failure to follow proper essay format: 10 points
Each infraction will be deducted from the total grade, not each individual essay.
