You will complete this assignment using the website www.AmericanRhetoric.com. Choose a speech and complete the assignment as if you were present when the speech actually occurred. Do not use movie speeches.
For this assignment, you need to familiarize yourself with the questions below. After observing the presentation online, you will write a 2-3 page, double-spaced. You should have standard 1-inch margins on all sides. Be sure that you answer each of the questions below within your paper. If you do not understand the question, refer to your textbook and/or ask you instructor.
The Setting: What was the date and time of the speech? Who was the speaker? Who was the audience? What was the size and demographic make-up? What topic did the speaker address?
The Speaker: Did you have any information about the speaker prior to attending the speech? Was the speaker introduced? What qualifications for speaking on this subject did the speaker have? What was your initial impression of the speaker? How would you rate the speaker’s ethos?
Introduction: Did the speaker gain attention effectively? What type of opening device was used in the introduction? What was the thesis? Was it clearly stated? Did the speaker make any attempt to dispose the audience favorably toward the speaker and/or the topic? How? Did the speaker clearly preview the main points?
Body: What were the main points (in complete sentences)? What Organizational Pattern did the speaker use? What types of supporting material did the speaker use for each main point? Was the support relevant and adequate? Did the speaker make use of good transitions? If informative, did the speech expand your knowledge of the topic? If persuasive, did you find the arguments/appeals compelling?
Conclusion: Was there an adequate summary? What type of closing device was used?
Delivery: What were the strongest aspects of the speaker’s delivery? What were the weakest aspects?
Overall: What was your overall impression of the speech? How would you rate this speech? (5=A, 4=B, 3=C, 2=D, 1=F)
