Scenario: Logic With Emotion
Susan stops writing her paper and starts writing about her own life. She needs to make changes. Her relationship with her mom is the best place to start. Family is important, but she needs a relationship with her mother that is healthy and doesn’t drag her down.
She looks deep within herself and realizes she loves her mom. She just doesn’t need to believe everything her mom says about her. Just like the misinformation campaign, she needs to see her truth and not let the rest drag her down. She also needs to accept that this is just how her mom is—it’s about her mother, not her.
A weight lifts off of Susan’s mind. She suddenly knows that she’s smart enough to get a degree. So, Frank and Juan made it look easy. She might need to work a little harder, but she can get there. She will make a fantastic psychologist.
She thinks about her friends. They like her for who she is and not what she does for them. She needs to stop trying to impress them. As long as she does what she can, who cares whether they are doing more or doing it better?
She turns back to her paper and realizes she has the answer. People believe the misinformation because it plays on what they fear, just like her mom’s comments feed Susan’s fears. The solution is to combat it with information that plays on their hopes. Logic needs to work with emotion.
As we wrap up our reading by exploring loving and lasting relationships, think about the dynamics of family and friends. How do Susan’s loving relationships affect her life?
