The islands of Hawaii are all volcanic and formed above an oceanic
hot spot. For this exam assignment you will evaluate the geology of
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and write a 1000-1500-word essay. As
part of your essay you should research and address the following:
What active volcanoes are in this National Park?
What types of magma are erupted from the volcanoes?
What causes the melting in the mantle that produces the lavas?
What is the history of volcanism and the associated natural hazards?
What is the relationship between the Hawaiian volcanoes and the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain?
Is the source of the magma in Hawaii similar to or different than the magma source(s) from the Yellowstone hot spot?
You should use at least three sources that need to be referenced in a standard in-line format
that allows them to be verified. A complete list of citations should
be included at the end of the essay. Your work must be original and
will be checked with Turnitin. The citation list should not be included
in the 1000-1500 words limit for the essay.
