Last week, you were introduced to Chamberlain Care. As a nursing student, you will demonstrate Chamberlain Care by applying the concepts of caring for yourself, your peers, and others. Learning this week builds on that introduction by examining the ethics of professional nursing practice. Working with both sick and well clients, nurses must be aware of their professional attitude and behavior. The American Nurses Association (ANA, 2015a) has established its Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Nurses (ANA, 2015b); these standards serve as a foundation for nursing practice and health promotion by outlining the attitudes and behaviors expected of nursing professionals.
The course outcomes covered in this week’s discussion include:
1. Discuss the professional nurse’s role in health-promotion activities.
2. Examine theories and concepts related to health-promotion behaviors.
3. Discuss health promotion, illness prevention, health maintenance, health restoration, and rehabilitation in relation to the nurse’s role in working with various populations.
4. Discuss the influences of moral, ethical, and legal principles on professional nursing practice.
