Begin this assignment by carefully reading and taking notes on the essay, “Blue-Collar Brilliance” by Mike Rose from The American Scholar. (Click here for the PDF version if you have trouble with the link.)
Using Microsoft Word or Google Docs, begin a new document and add an MLA heading and a title for the assignment. NOTE: Use your own original title – do not use the title of the author’s text.
In the first few lines of your paper, you should provide a brief introduction of the topic of the article before you transition to a detailed summary.
Logically transition to a 2-3 paragraph summary of the text. Be sure to include all the elements of academic summaries outlined in the Week 1 Materials, including the author’s name and the article title, an objective rendering of the author’s thesis and main ideas, and signal phrases throughout to give the author credit for their ideas.
Feel free to use paraphrases and direct quotations throughout your summary to illustrate the author’s ideas. These concepts are explained in the Week 1 Materials.
