It should have a descriptive title, approximately 700 words and have multiple paragraphs to earn the points available.
This assignment will ask you to read an academic article on a particular topic, and respond to the topic using your personal experience and observation. You will also need to find an additional reputable source for an additional quote that fits in your paper on the topic.
Length: multiple paragraphs, around 2 pages double-spaced, 700 words or longer.
PROMPT:
Based on the assigned article below, write about a focused experience or observation regarding an impact of COVID-19 on you or someone you know. It should clearly relate to one of the “impacts” in Kaitlyn Jones’ article below. You’ll need to include a quote from Jones’ article and another another reputable source you find.
STEPS:
1. First watch the video on “How to Read Academic Sources” and then read this article, using the questions you’ve developed and taking notes:
“The Initial Impacts of COVID-19 on Children and Youth

,” by Kaitlyn Jones, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, US Department of Health and Human Services, August 2021
2. Brainstorm about your response to this article. What part of this article or what “impact” relates to your life or someone you know? What is a particular impact? How did it affect you or that other person? What is a particular experience of that impact?
3. Choose one of your ideas above to write your paper. Don’t worry at first about having an intro and conclusion. Just start writing your experience or observation you want to talk about.
4. Now look for an additional article that looks reliable. Perhaps it’s from a major newspaper, another governmental source, a reputable writer or recognized organization. You can use Google, or try using one of our library databases. Find a quote that you could include in your article. It might be a statistic, opinion, or projection by a reputable expert.
5. Also find a good quote from Kaitlyn Jones’ article that can fit in your paper.
6. Watch the videos on “Writing Good Introductions and Thesis Statements” and “Writing Good Conclusions.”
7. After peer review, EDIT this paper using peer reviewer comments and Grammarly.
8. Remember to include your Works Cited for the two sources you cite, from Ms. Jones’ article and the one you find.
1. Identify the writer in the paragraph. You can either use a cue like “As Ember says,…” or you can put the author’s name in parentheses after the quote: (Ember)
2. Then you also need to provide a full bibliographic reference for the article at the end of the paper. It will look like this:
WORKS CITED
Author last name, author first name. “Title of article.” Name of newspaper, journal, website. Date of publication. URL.
For the video that you watched for Assignment 2, here is what that looks like:
“Title of Video.” Name of Director, Dir. Date if available. Name of video/production company.
