Essay Prompt: “Innovative narrative technicians”
As a literary movement, the 1960s Boom sparked commercial global success for many Latin American authors. Magical realism, historical fiction, and a wide variety of narrative techniques are some of the characteristics borne out of the time. Often, Gabriel García Márquez is seen as the face of both the Boom and of the aesthetic, magical realism. However, his peer writers are as experimental and as highly regarded for their non-traditional story structures, use of character, plot, figurative language (symbols, allusions, metaphors, imagery), and theme.
For this essay, you are going to compare the narrative techniques used by three authors in three separate stories. Rather than try to retell each story, you must select a smaller passage as evidence from each of the stories you can argue represents their individual writing style, but also shows some overlap.
